Women in Science Night 2014Opening Remarks by Erica Ring
11th Grade Science Teacher If you google "girls in science" you are sure to see one message stand out. Study after study, magazine articles, radio shows, and episodes of 20/20 all tell us the same thing - most girls aren't interested in science and girls don't go on to study sciences in university. But that is NOT what is happening at East Side Community High School. Each January and June your roundtable judges sit down in a small group with you and and those stats and articles that say you don't do science seem like a joke. You amaze us with your science knowledge. Every day I look around my classroom and see girls who are asking incredible questions, solving hard problems, and are teaching our boys a thing or two about what it means to be a scientist. Tonight is about you. Tonight is just one more step we take as a school, as scientists, as women to changing those headlines in the news. Please first give yourselves a round of applause for being here tonight... Please welcome our amazing panel of women scientists... Let's say thank you to our College Bound counselor Sonia and our Parent coordinator Letty. Please join me in thanking your science teachers for taking the potential they see in you and turning it into a night like this - Polly, Danielle, Ileana, Barbara, Chris, Lyn, and Joe V the science G!" |
